Summary: In the aftermath of a climate disaster, the rulers of the city of Ark blame words for the tragedies of the past. Language has therefore been limited to 500 of the most necessary words, like Eat, Food, Me, You, Them, Water. All other words are outlawed and language itself is dying. Letta, former apprentice to the Wordsmith, is in hiding and teaching language in secret. The leaders of Ark aren't to be trusted but nobody can speak out against their terrible crimes. When Letta uncovers the shocking truth, she'll do anything to bring language back to life.
